Make your own Tinman Costume

Searching for his heart when he already had one, the Tinman is an endearing character from “The Wizard of Oz” movie. Joining the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow along with Dorothy, the foursome of new friends heads to the Emerald City to take counsel with the great Oz. In the original book by L. Frank Baum, this character was actually a woodsman named Nick chopper that was under a dark curse by a wicked witch. So, oil up your creaky joints and put together a Tinman costume for your next Halloween party or even school theater production.

Items needed to make your Tinman Costume

Items Needed:
Grey pants
Grey long–sleeved t–shirt
2 yards of silver lame fabric
Silver spray paint
Red marker
Poster board
Silver face paint
Black grease pin
Prop axe

Step 1: To replicate the look of tin, you’ll need to create a base for your Tinman costume with grey pants and a grey long–sleeved shirt.
Step 2: Create the top to your Tinman costume by creating a pattern–free tunic from the gold lame fabric. First fold the fabric in half lengthwise; measure the width of your body and cut the fabric down to be about 6–inches wider. In the center of the top fold cut out a triangle shape to be the neckline. Glue or sew the sides from the bottom to the top leaving about 6–inches clear for arm holes.

Step 3: With the poster board, create cone–shaped hat that resembles a funnel and spray paint with metallic silver paint. Secure to your head with bobby pins or a string tie if needed.

Step 4: With the remainder of the poster board, make a belt and arm cuffs that are also painted silver. Also cut out a small heart shape that you color in red and pin to the tunic to indicate that you really do have a heart.

Step 5: Finish off your Tinman costume look with silver face paint rubbed over your face and use grease pens to make the distinctive marks around the jaw.
