Make your own Monk Costume

Poverty, chastity and obedience are all vows that monks in the Catholic church commit to as part of their service. Often living a solitary life to do God’s work, some monks even take a vow of silence. However, you won’t be able to keep quiet wearing a Monk costume that you make at home with a few special accessories. While you might not be the life of the party in a monk costume, you will probably be the most revered.

Items needed to make your Monk Costume

Items Needed:
Dark brown fabric
Cord belt
Monk wig
2 large tongue depressors
Leather string
Bible or scrolls

Step 1: Using a pattern, create a monk’s robes out of dark brown fabric in a woolen fabric. The style will be long to the floor with long sleeves that flair out a bit and also features a hood if desired. To cinch in the waist, wear a simple belt fashioned from a length of white cording or jute rope.

Step 2: Unless you want to shave part of your head, you’ll want to wear a monk wig. This wig captures the distinctive look of a monk’s hair–do which is like a long bowl cut with a top “cap” shaved off. This style, called a tonsure, may seem severe; however, it is meant to be a renunciation of worldly fashion and esteem.

Step 3: Make a cross necklace to wear with your monk costume using two wooden tongue depressors glued together. Paint or embellish as you see fit and then punch a hole in the top and string with a leather cord to wear around your neck.

Step 4: Wear simple leather sandals and bring along props that a monk might have such as a bible, parchment scrolls or even chants to perform.
