The sport of Sumo wrestling is a competitive event where one wrestler tries to force the other out of a circular ring or touch the ground with body parts other than the feet. Sumo wrestling dates back to the ancient Edo period of Japan and continues to be practiced there as a popular professional sport. There are many rituals in Sumo, even today. Professional athletes live in a communal situation where every aspect of their lives, such as training, eating and clothing, follow a strict adherence to tradition.
