Puritans came from Europe and settled in North America primarily for religious freedom. The term puritan is does not necessarily mean Pilgrim, those first settlers in Jamestown and the early colonies. However, many Pilgrims were Puritans based on their stringent beliefs in the Protestant Church. The Puritan lifestyle has been captured in literature, most notably in Nathanial Hawthorne’s novel “The Scarlet Letter” and playwright Arthur Miller’s story of “The Crucible”.  While these were both pieces of fiction, they did capture the historical background correctly.
