Surely you’ve heard the witticisms “A penny saved is a penny earned” or “Fish and visitors both stink after three days”. These clever but true adages were penned by Benjamin Franklin, the great American statesman, diplomat, author, satirist and inventor from colonial times. Aside from his work in “Poor Richard’s Almanac”, Benjamin Franklin is also well know for his early investigations into electricity, formation of public library systems, signing of the Declaration of Independence and other innovations that he freely shared with our emerging society.
Dressing up in a period-costume is appropriate for many occasions including historical reenactments, Fourth of July celebrations, parades and even Halloween. Both adults and children can dress up in a Benjamin Franklin costume with knee-length breeches and matching frock coat with white lace jabot and cuffs. For a going-to-Independence-Hall look, add white stockings or long socks, colonial style shoes and a feathered pen. Benjamin Franklin costumes of course need his trademark style; a longer white wig with a balding top and pair of bifocals (his own invention!) to perch upon your nose. Have a friend dress as other early American presidents or invite Mrs. Deborah Franklin for a carriage ride into town.
