Simply put, a prosthetic is an artificial body part. In medicine, doctors use prosthetics to provide function to a patient that has an impairment due to loss of limb or other body part. For costumes, wearing prosthetics is just a fun way to accessorize your look by adding something new or unexpected. Prosthetics work well for all types of Halloween costumes and come to accommodate kids and adults.
One of the most famous prosthetics known to children is Captain Hook’s iron hook hand. This crude prosthetic was used to replace the real hand that was slashed off by Peter Pan in a sword fight and there are costume versions made to slip over and conceal your real hand. Elf ears are another very popular prosthetic, not only with Lord of the Ring elves and Santa’s workshop elves, but especially with online gamers who frequent alternate virtual universes such as Second Life or World of Warcraft. Many other prosthetics are available such as devil horns, facial features of monsters and more. To adhere most of these prosthetic accessories, you will need spirit gum and flesh-colored latex makeup for blending seamlessly into the skin.
